Memorial Day weekend is almost here and somehow this unofficial harbinger of summer has snuck up on us. It wasn’t that long ago that we had snow on the ground and now you’re saying I have to get this body into a bathing suit? Say isn’t so!

Whether or not you’ve been planning for this moment since March or you figure you’ll just start getting ready for next year now, here are some tips to follow to help you reach your goals.

1. Get moving – everyday. As much as possible. Take the stairs, do a home-based workout, dance, walk, etc. Do push-ups, squats, lunges, chair dips, planks and mountain climbers. You know what to do so do it!
2. Watch the carbs, particularly processed. Instead, focus on eating high-fiber whole grains like oats, quinoa, and brown rice.
3. Drink water. Weather is getting warmer so you need more water anyway. Replace any drinks that have artificial sweeteners with water flavored with your favorite fruit.
4. Watch your calories. It’s simple: Eat more calories than you burn off, you gain weight.
5. Cut back on alcohol. Alcohol can bloat you, particularly beer. And, you tend to eat more when drinking alcohol.
6. Watch your sodium intake. Salt can also bloat you and is often hidden in the foods we eat. When eating out, skip the sauces or ask for them on the side. Of course, stay away from the processed foods which typically contain a lot of salt.
7. Go raw. Opt for raw, whole foods as much as possible.
8. Eat lean protein. Foods that are high in protein or fiber can actually help slow the digestive process. The result is that your stomach feels full longer and sends a message to your brain that you don’t need to eat more.

Enough proselytizing. The final two are:
9. Take care of your skin. Moisturize and exfoliate! Get rid of the dry, scaly skin.
10. Buy lots of sunscreen! As one who spent years in the sun, I wish I knew then what I know now. Taking care of yourself also means taking care of our skin.

Most important, enjoy yourself this summer!
